At the same time, there is no simple, widely recognized mechanism for identifying journals that meet robust, independently verified standards of trustworthiness. The ISC is working with partners from the publishing community to explore how this gap might be addressed.
As a first step, the ISC is exploring whether a minimum set of journal-level requirements for trustworthiness, covering core aspects of research integrity such as peer review quality, editorial oversight and standards compliance, can be identified and agreed upon. If this proves achievable, the longer-term aim is a trust marker system through which journals meeting these requirements could signal their trustworthiness to researchers, institutions and funders through a publicly accessible certification.
